50 Year Old Vines Shiraz 2022

$80.00 / bottle

WINEMAKING

From select Shiraz vineyards planted over 50 years ago. The grapes are handpicked, destemmed but not crushed, and they spend seven days on their skins in open fermenters with hand-plunging twice daily to more gently extract colour, flavours and tannins. This is followed by careful basket pressing and malolactic fermentation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak before 18 months maturation in our cellars.

VINEYARD
The grapes for this wine come from an estate vineyard in the Vine Vale parish of the Barossa on deep sand over clay.
These low-yielding “Barossa Old Vines” were planted before 1965 and are now fully mature.

They have a root structure and trunk thickness that encourage diversity of flavour and character. Their worthiness has been proven over many vintages, consistently producing the highest quality fruit.

TASTING NOTES

Medium to deep crimson/purple. Powerfully intense aniseed, blackberry, mulberry and blueberry fruit aromas, with ginger, mint notes. Vigorous and fleshy with generous blueberry, blackberry flavours, excellent mid-palate richness and plentiful brambly chocolatey tannins.

Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot

A year and a half in a mix of new and older French barriques, has seen a wine of grace and intensity emerge. This is really good. Granted, not priced for everyday drinking, but even at this price it drinks better than many wines which will cost you double or more. A near opaque, black hue, this is dense and gorgeous with a plush and generous structure. The nose is dominated by notes of cassis and plums, along with deftly handled oak. A powerful wine, yet one which is almost cuddly, with soft and gentle tannins. It has impressive length and will drink wonderfully well for the next fifteen years. Love it. 2025-2040

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Sumptuous and enticing, the wine shows blackberry, warm spice, toasty oak, and potpourri aromas on the nose, followed by an opulent palate displaying outstanding weight backed by velvety texture and layers of polished tannins. Wonderfully expressed with a prolonged, delicious finish. At its best: now to 2040.

95 Points

Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

A hands-off minimalistic approach is taken with this wine, using open fermenters and basket pressing. Rich and plush, displaying spices and bright red fruits underpinned by dark fruit characters. The tannins are silky fine, with a slightly chalk character to complement the rich fruit. It all works really well. Excellent wine of elegance and charm. 2025-2040

Shiraz sourced from the subregion of Vine Vale in the lee of the eastern range; matured in a combination of French (70%) and American (30%). Opulent blackberry, plum and boysenberry fruit with underlying licorice, black olive, fruitcake spice, dark chocolate, cedar, panforte, cassis, tobacco and earth. Traditionally framed black fruits, oak-derived wood spice, dark chocolate, fine, powdery tannins and classic Barossa tone on the finish. Drink by 2040
